Best Netflix Shows to Binge Watch

By Matthew Mwijage

Lucifer

This story revolves around Lucifer Morningstar, yes, the Devil, or at least the DC Universe version. Living up to his character, he abandons hell and finds himself working for the Los Angeles Police Department. Power, love, lust, and lots of humour. Twists and turns that you would not expect and you may not see the devil as the villain he always is.

I thought I would get a basic devil with horns, but we get a play-by-play of his journey to Earth and why he does what he does whilst incorporating all the aspects of the divine and remaining true to its essence with a plot that reinvents the biblical narrative.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Watch Sabrina Spellman, a half-mortal, half-witch teenager, navigate the worlds of humans and witches as she comes into powers of the dark arts. Does she have enough power to face the fear and terror that awaits her in this world of mystery?

A series that encapsulates all the aspects of horror while still showing us the struggles of a normal teenager in high school that we can relate to and, at times, sympathise with. It’s not what you would expect from an urban fantasy horror—but in an amazing way.

Black Lightning

An electrifying story of the retired DC Comics superhero Black Lightning (Jefferson Pierce) as he is forced to once again save his city and confront the new challenges in his family. Can he survive as a black man hiding his secret identity from the world? And what awaits his daughters’ futures as they come into a new world?

I love how it keeps to the comics’ storyline while still making it relatable to our time and the issues we see around us. It doesn’t hurt that the villains are literally taken down by the literal embodiment of energy.

Titans

We follow these young DC heroes on a new take on the famous Teen Titans that we all grew up knowing and loving. Can Raven, Starfire, Robin, Nightwing, Beastboy, Superboy, Wondergirl, Dove and Hawk save the world from threats—worldly and otherworldly? It begins with literally preventing ‘Hell on Earth’ as they find each other and become more than friends—a family.

Proteges in their teens discover themselves and their powers; what more can you ask for as you dive into their shoes?

Cursed

We have all heard about the Great King Arthur and his famous sword Excalibur. But how did that power come to be? We find a young and powerful girl, Nimue, as she fights and finds herself on the journey of becoming the famed “Lady of The Lake”. Her story is a beautiful reimagination of a legend and following it was a journey that I did not expect, especially in an era governed by men.

The Witcher

Geralt of Rivia, the last Witcher, travels the world as he hunts monsters. This dark fantasy follows his fate and destiny as he is placed in the path of a powerful sorceress and a princess with a special gift as they try to balance the scales in a world where men are often wicked.

This fantasy was a thrill to watch; society’s definition of who and what you are does not define you neither in reality nor in fiction.

Shadow and Bone

Alina Starkov, an orphan girl who only wanted to live her life free with her best friend is thrown into a world she never expected. After discovering power beyond anyone’s imagination, she is torn from everything she knows to fight in a twisted war that she discovers has secrets and lies intertwined within. Will she survive?

In one moment, your life can change forever; in reality, too, anything is possible. It might seem far-fetched, but it is true all the same.

Shadow Hunters: The Mortal Instruments

Clary Fray, lied to all her life, discovers an entirely new supernatural world intertwined with that of man. Angels and demons exist and their blood runs through some of those living on Earth. How does Clary find her way in a world of secrets and power beyond her comprehension as she fights for love in the midst of it all?

Absolutely no words can describe the depiction of this adaptation of the novels of the same name.

Warrior Nun

Ava Silva wakes up from what can only be called death. How is this possible? She is the Halo Bearer and there is a secret sect of nuns who hunt demons. She is the key to their survival and that of the whole world. She has been given a new destiny yet she struggles to accept it. Will the world be destroyed because of her?

Honestly, who knew nuns could fight? The comic relief is impeccable as is the reinvention of how we perceive the relationship between man and the divine.

Manifest

A lot can change in five and a half years. How will the Stone family handle what can only be described as the impossible as they discover divinity and the involvement of beings beyond human comprehension? Why were they chosen for this and what does it mean?

The suspense from the first episode captivates you and, as you try and figure out what happens next, curveballs are constantly sent your way.
